We have been working with ASL Discoveries since September 2015. We contracted for the full school year and offer this speciality class once a week for all children, ranging in age from 2-5 years. ASL Discoveries uses music to teach sign language and the classes are interactive, educational, uplifting and fun! We particularly appreciate the fact that the class is catered to our youngest learners (2’s) and also very well suited for our oldest students (4-5’s). It is rare to find a specialty class that interests ALL the children, but ASL Discoveries manages to do so, seemingly effortlessly. The ASL Discoveries team is so well equipped in working with all ages that we had absolutely no difficulty integrating the class into all our curricula. The children love ASL class! They light up when their teacher arrives and you literally see the excitement on their faces. The teachers captivate and hold the their attention, week after week, and have done so since the very first class. The children picked up on the signs immediately and have not only retained this new knowledge, but build their ASL vocabulary every week. By the end of the first semester, most of the children knew at least 20 signs and how to use them appropriately.
In addition to the positive impact the program has had on the children, the parents are thrilled we offer this class. The ASL team sends us lesson plans and themes (with detailed pictures of the signs the children will be learning) which we in turn send home to the parents. The parents really appreciate the opportunity to continue their child’s learning and practice all the signs at home. The ASL team is coherent in their lesson plans and techniques. If we have a new teacher fill in, she picks up exactly where the prior teacher left off. It is clear that the staff is well trained, which provides this consistency across the board. The directors of the company are VERY responsive and accommodating to our needs. Here at Lolly’s, we love ASL Discoveries and are big advocates of exposing young children to the art of sign language as part of their early childhood education.
